Urban Swing Bigband was formed by Shea Stanley in 2004 using talented members of existing bands, some new "up and coming" players, plus the experience of several professional musicians. There has been a considerable interest in swing dancing, particularly from younger dancers, plus a rekindled desire to listen and dance to swing songs of the '40s.
Band names such as Glen Miller and Count Basie are once again popular, as are the songs of Gershwin, through Strayhorn to the more modern Mancini and Van Morrison.

Shea's vocals are featured in most of the arrangements and are the mainstay of the band's popularity. Most of the players are featured as soloists at some time, which gives them a chance to play to the mood of the audience. Players are encouraged to help with arrangements.

The Band is made up of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, a guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. The player mix is varied, and several players "double" on other instruments. There are more players than there are "chairs" so a slightly different group of musicians appear at the performances.

The calendar is a balance between pub gigs, organised dances (at least 4 per year) as well as festivals and private functions.
